What is an early pregnancy assessment ultrasound scan? 

Ultrasound in early pregnancy  is central to the management of patients with suspected early pregnancy problems.

An early pregnancy assessment ultrasound scan carried out by fertility ultrasound is a high resolution internal ultrasound scan that can occur between 6-12 weeks gestation.

This highly specialised ultrasound scan is carried out by our qualified fertility specialist radiographer. It takes approximately 15 minutes.

Our state of the art ultrasound machine incorporates 3D imaging into the scan allowing you to see your baby for the first time. The 3D scan is an important evaluation in the first trimester. 

 

    Our high resolution transvaginal early pregnancy scans will confirm the following:

     

    If you have a gestation sac in utero

    If it is a single or multiple pregnancy by confirming the number of embryos establish viability by confirming the presence of a heartbeat.

    Early pregnancy ultrasound is a proven accurate method of correctly dating the gestational age of the fetus.

    Reassure a woman and her partner of the absence of complications.

    If the news is bad news we will aim to look after you by emailing your report to your GP straightaway so that you can get referred to the early pregnancy unit.

    Types of early pregnancy scans we offer are:

     

    Transvaginal Ultrasound from 6 weeks

    If you have had IVF treatment and have a positive pregnancy test, your IVF clinic will now request you get your bHCG bloods (GP) and a 6-7 weeks early pregnancy scan. 

    Your initial scan will be to confirm your positive pregnancy result is a viable pregnancy. Our high resolution transvaginal ultrasound scan will confirm the following

    1. Confirm the presence of a gestation sac insitu,

    2. Confirm if it is in the correct location in the uterus 

    3. Confirm the presence of a fetal pole.

    We will send this report to you and to your fertility clinic straight away. If there are any concerns with the scan, we will send your report to your GP so that your GP can follow up with the next steps of your care pathway.

     

    Early pregnancy reassurance scan 

    Have you just found out you are pregnant and would like to get reassurance or have you suffered from a previous miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy? Our high resolution transvaginal ultrasound scan will confirm if there is a gestation sac, if it is in the correct location in the uterus and not located ectopically and to confirm the presence of fetal pole and cardiac activity. 

    The reassurance scan is carried out in 2 appointments, the 1st appointment will occur between 6 – 7 weeks and a follow up appointment will occur 2 weeks later to give reassurance the pregnancy is ongoing. Our specialist ultrasound machine has 3D capabilites allowing you to see your baby for the first time in the early first trimester.

    Spontaneous miscarriage

    Spontaneous miscarriage affects 1 in 5 pregnancies. If you have bleeding or cramping or feel something isn’t right please book in with us straight away for an immediate appointment. We can provide an appointment for your scan either the same day or within 24 hours. 

    If the scan reveals the pregnancy is not viable, our aim is to look after you by emailing your report to your GP straightaway so that you can get referred to the early pregnancy unit.

    Your ultrasound report with images will be emailed to you in the event that your ultrasound report can help speed up your patient pathway through the early pregnancy unit.

     

    Why would I need a reassurance ultrasound?

     

    • To confirm the presence of a gestation sac
    • To confirm your baby’s heartbeat.
    • To confirm the correct dates of your pregnancy
    • If you have bleeding or cramps and want to confirm ongoing pregnancy
    • History of ectopic pregnancy
    • Our 3D ultrasound from 6 weeks to 12 weeks confirms the presence of limbs and insertion of the umbilical cord.
